Peptides are short chains of amino acids, typically consisting of between 2 and 50 amino acids linked together by peptide bonds. Due to their smaller size, peptides are often highly specific in their biological roles and can act as signalling molecules within the body.

Proteins are larger, more complex molecules made up of one or more long chains of amino acids (usually over 50). They fold into intricate three-dimensional structures that determine their function, such as enzymes, structural components, and transport molecules.

The primary difference between peptides and proteins lies in their size and complexity. Peptides are shorter and generally have simpler structures, while proteins are longer chains that fold into complex shapes. This structural complexity allows proteins to perform a wider variety of functions.


4. Functional Differences

Peptides often act as signalling molecules, influencing processes such as hormone release, immune responses, and cellular communication. Proteins, on the other hand, tend to have broader roles, including catalysing biochemical reactions (enzymes), providing structural support, and transporting molecules.
